Whispers

Whispers is an experimental dance film directed by Alicia Estes and choreographed by Kiah Carpenter and Andy Slavin that explores the concept of mental health from the perspective of a snow-globe dancer. I lost my sister a year ago to suicide, and this piece was inspired to show individuals suffering from mental health disorders that they are not alone, and that more is being done every day to help erase the social stigmas preventing them from receiving the help that they want and need. Depression is something that many people can't comprehend unless they have experienced it themselves or through someone that they love. There is a struggle to find happiness in everyday occurences, and often an inability to love oneself. The pressure to be perfect, to be successful, and the desire to feel wanted can affect many people differently, and this film was inspired to portray the complexity of these uncontrollable emotions that often go unnoticed.
