This film, “My Mom” was created as part of a personal project series by Chara Bui (she/her). This series contains a short film collection about mental health experiences accompanied by music she played on guitar. She believes that art is a powerful gateway toward healing, resilience, and growth and that storytelling is a profound way for us to connect to each other.

My mom was a brave woman
who crossed the ocean in search of a better life.
She cleaned up the toys we left on the floor
without saying a word.
I and my two brothers went to sleep
wearing the pajamas she made for us.
She wasn’t a coward.
She wasn’t lazy
and she never stopped caring about us.
She was fighting mental illness
and withstood the pressure until the pressure was too much.
and because she is no longer here today,
I live on behalf of her
and I will never forget her…
