Chain Complex

Within the context of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, what appears to be small steps for the outsider can be the most challenging of victories for the sufferer. In this sense we wanted to convey the difficulty of trying to rebel against the rules imposed by one’s own psyche. To achieve this, we focused on creating a world that was as visually constraining, repetitive and ordered as the mind of the film’s subject. We decided not to use a score that the sounds associated with certain actions – the trickle of a shower, the cutting of an apple – become definitive as auditory waypoints within a routine. Ultimately, we wish for the film to represent and even participate in the orderedness that causes the suffering, in the hope that a sense of real tension can emerge from the eventual attempt to break free from routine even if it may be in the slightest of ways, and in the sense that the viewer may experience even only a modicum of the frustration of a sufferer.
