Innovative Strategies for Addressing Stigma

The stigma surrounding mental illness is a major issue in the United States today, one with a wide range of negative impacts such as preventing people from getting the support they need and deserve; delegitimizing the experiences of people living with mental illness; silencing minority voices; widening the gap between those with higher and lower socioeconomic statuses; and perpetuating a culture where it is not acceptable or safe to talk about our struggles and real experiences. Hear from two organizations who are utilizing art, innovative campaigns and community connections to address stigma.

Moderator: Avital Havusha, Public Health Solutions

Presenters:

  • Cary McQueen, Art with Impact: Mental Health on a Large Scale – Using the Arts and Creativity to Reduce Public Stigma around Mental Health Issues
  • Blair Harvey, Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago: Using cross-sector collaborations to research, develop, and pilot an anti-stigma campaign
