AWI Voices With Impact presents: Same Story, New Words

Facilitated by: Marlene Padron

Featuring:

  • 6 Feet Apart by Monty Cole
  • Once Upon a Time by Athena Russell
  • Blue Garden by Natalie Murao

The stories that define us are passed down through the generations, but each generation has its own perspective and unique lens through which we view the world. So while the facts of history may not change, their interpretations frequently do, and should. In this session we will watch three short films in which a story that was once about a parent or grandparent has been transformed into a new and meaningful narrative. Together with the audience, filmmakers Monty Cole, Athena Russell and Natalie Murao will consider questions around story ownership, the truth of emotions, and what it’s like to tell stories that reflect our true selves.

Led by the filmmakers, the festival features a selection of interactive seminars and engaging discussions, related to the films and the themes we are exploring through this year’s program. If you are interested in learning about these sessions, you can see them all on our Voices With Impact information page!
