My Neighbor Campaign, Spring 2012

A national discussion about barriers and
relationships in Israel and Palestine, Spring 2012

My Neighbor, Art With Impact’s Spring 2012 campaign, will feature screenings of two Israel/Palestine-focused films, BUDRUS and CHECKPOINT, at universities around the country. Working with professors and students alike, the goal is education and engagement through the power of media.

BUDRUS tells the story of Palestinian community organizer, Ayed Morrar, who unites local Fatah and Hamas members along with Israeli supporters in an unarmed movement to save his village, Budrus, from destruction by Israel’s Separation Barrier.

CHECKPOINT richly documents the power dynamics enforced at the checkpoints that Palestinians must pass through in the course of their daily lives, and the destructive impact of the occupation on both societies.

We believe that when students are exposed to multiple unique and compelling stories presented in a humanity-based rather than inflammatory way, they will develop their own informed, individual points of view and then engage with, rather than shy away from, this complex issue.

The My Neighbor campaign will use these two films, supplemented by our educational materials and online discussions, to engage students in discussions about the complexities of relationships with neighbors, particularly those with whom we do not agree. Our collateral materials will link students to Art With Impact’s growing online database of volunteer opportunities. All our educational and volunteer materials are available at no cost to students, professors, filmmakers and the public on our website.

BUDRUS and CHECKPOINT would be a rich supplement to courses including: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, surveys on the Middle East, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Nonviolent Resistance. Examples of student groups who will engage include Hillel, Jewish Voice for Peace, OneVoice Movement and Students for Justice in Palestine.
